TRIED IT!! Make Laundry Soap from Bar of Ivory Soap

I stumbled across this "recipe" in a magazine called "Keepers at Home". I am going to try this and I'll report back on this post how it works out...sounds almost too easy!!!

Melt one bar of Ivory soap with some water on the stove. When dissolved, pour into a gallon container 3/4 full of warm water. Turn a few times to mix and then turn again the next day. Use one cup per load, turning each time you use it. For dish towels or diapers, you can add a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil for antiseptic properties.

  1. Ok, I made it today. It takes awhile to heat it on the stove, about 45 minutes and you need to put about 2 cups of water with the bar, it works best to heat it on a low setting..2 or 3 and cover it with a lid. We washed a load with it and the laundry does not smell like Ivory, I was kind of hoping it would, I love the smell. It works and I like it, it cost about .60 to make if you buy your bars at Dillons....3/1.59. I didn't have a gallon container, so I used an empty 62 oz laundry detergent jug and because of the smaller size, it's more concentrated so I didn't need to use a cup, I just used a cap full. I will replace my laundry soap with this from now on, you can't beat the price, and Don and I didn't notice any difference from our regular detergent...which is whatever is on sale...anything from Tide to Extra. On a scale of 1-10, I rate this an 8.
